Leaving Home Checklist

I don’t want to be concerned with issues from home while I am abroad, such as a phone call about a water hose that was left on. Things may pop up, but it’s always best to limit the possible disruptions. Therefore I have used a checklist of items to handle before leaving.

My Checklist

  • Have I taken care of bills by pre-pay, autopay?
  • Have I notified the post office to hold my mail?
  • Did I leave an extra house key with a friend, family, or neighbor?
  • Have I taken an extra set of car keys with me kept in separate luggage or given to a traveling companion?
  • Did I leave my house lights on or off?
  • Have I adjusted the thermostat for heating or cooling?
  • Have I unplugged small appliances?
  • Have I turned off my main water line?
  • Have I talked to my doctor about my medications, and do I need refills?
  • Is my estate planning up to date?
  • Have I informed my executor of my travel plans?
  • Have I left a copy of my itinerary, travel insurance confirmation page, passport number, flight schedule, and lodging in a location that a family member or friend can access?
  • Have I taken care of my pet?
  • Is someone watering outside plants?

The length of time away from home, as well as other variables, impacts my list. If it’s a longer trip, or the possibility of a weather event back home while traveling, my list may be adjusted. And friends, family, or neighbors I tap for help also changes.

It’s the peace of mind I’m after, and that adds to a successful trip.
